The Regional Japan Bowl is a daylong academic competition and cultural fair for students studying the Japanese language. Competing students are tested in the areas of grammar, "kanji" - Chinese characters used in Japanese, two Japanese character "alphabets," "kotowaza" - Japanese proverbs, onomatopoeic phrases, culture, and listening comprehension. The competition is open to high school students of Japanese II, III, and IV levels of study, and second-year college-level students.

At the past event, about 60 students from 11 high schools and two universities from Colorado and Wyoming competed. Teams from Utah and New Mexico have been invited as well for the 2005 competition.

Almost as many students and guests visited our cultural presentations featuring martial arts, Japanese animation and manga comic drawing, and a Chinese/Japanese board game called "Go."

Everyone from the community is invited to observe the many cultural presentations and exciting final rounds of the competition. Increased cultural contributors and Japanese community presenters are expected in 2005.
