The 9th annual Shakuhachi Summer Camp of the Rockies, in conjunction with Sunrise Ranch, announces a rare live conccert featuring four of the world's foremost virtuosos of the Japanese Bamboo Flue, the Shakuhachi.
This traditional instrument, one that can take a lifetime to learn to play well, has a history spanning several countries, and has been used for an unbeliebably wide range of music, from the haunting lyricism of the ancient Zen meditation music called Honkyoku, to the most abstract explorations of modern Avant Garde, and even jazz. The shakuhachi can be heard playing a major role in the soundtrack for the recent movie Memoirs of a Geisha. It has been called the most expressive musical instrument next to the human voice.
Assembled for only one concert performance this year, four internationally-acclaimed Shakuhachi Masters will present a program showcasing the wide diversity of Shakuhachi Masters will present a program showcasing the wide diversity of Shakuhachi repertoire. From Tokyo, Japam, come Karou Kakizakai and Christopher Yohmei Dlasdel; from Kyoto, Japan, Yoshio Kurahashi. They will be joined by Boulder's own David Wheeler in a series of solos, duos, and ensemble pieces, some of which will feature special guest Yoko Hiraoka on Koto, Shamisen, and voie.
