Andrew Svedlow, Professor of Art History and formerly Dean of the College of Performing and Visual Arts at the University of Northern Colorado, explores the history of the revered rock garden at the Ryoan-ji Temple located in Kyoto, Japan, and the aesthetics which underlie this iconic stone garden. Unfolding the significant connections between aesthetic theories at the time of the creation of the garden and the resonation of those ideas provides some insight into a contemporary sensibility about nature, art, and the place of contemplation in the aesthetic experience. Participants will be encouraged to share their aesthetic and contemplative responses to the visual representation of the garden.

Doors open at 11:30 am
