JASC hosts Global Mentor Meet at CU Boulder

CU Boulder Students Explore Global Careers with JASC Mentors

How do you take the first steps toward an international business career? What kinds of jobs might require Japanese language skills? Will a major in international finance translate to a job in Colorado? What if I want to work for a foreign company? University of Colorado Boulder students posed these and other questions to a group of seven mentors visiting their campus Wednesday evening for a “speed-mentoring” event organized by the Japan America Society of Colorado (JASC).

Most of the approximately 30 students who attended are majoring in international business, international finance, or international affairs. Some expressed a particular interest in Japan or are learning Japanese; and some were simply interested in learning more about what it means to have a global career. All engaged enthusiastically in the conversations, seeking helpful nuggets, networking connections, and general advice.

“I came because this is kind of a perfect event for me,” said Charlie Lamy, a senior. “I’m interested in international affairs, international business, and Japanese. So it’s a perfect combination.”

The evening began with short statements from each of the mentors, who described a wide range of career pathways in business, government, and the nonprofit sectors. Their comments underscored an important point for students in the early stages of career exploration: career paths rarely follow a predetermined and straight line. Instead, most of the mentors described careers that began in one sector and took unexpected

turns into others. JASC president Stephanie Garnica, for example, who joined the event as a mentor, told students how her career began with the peace corps, moved into a logistics company, then shifted to the state’s office of economic development promoting foreign direct

investment into the state, and later to Denver International Airport and the city of Denver, where she now works to attract international businesses that are looking to expand in the U.S. Stephanie’s and other mentor stories made clear that most people’s career pathways

only look logical in hindsight, and it’s more important for students to remain curious and open to change than to have everything mapped out from day one. Even so, many students who attended the event had some clear goals and directions they want to pursue and found value in hearing from professionals who had similar experiences. Brandon Su, founder and president of CU’s Global Business Club, has helped organize other similar campus events that give him and his fellow students opportunities to network. He appreciated hearing about what it takes to help a Japanese company expand into the United States. “It was really cool to hear from people who have brought companies from Japan to the U.S. or vice versa. I have family overseas, they might want to expand to the U.S. some day. That’s something I want to do—I’d love

to bridge that gap.”

Students weren’t the only ones who found the event inspiring and motivating. Mentors enjoyed talking with the students, sharing their stories, and offering guidance. Kosuke Masuda of Shoyeido Corporation, a Japanese incense company with a U.S. branch in Boulder, attended the event hoping to network with potential future recruits interested in working for a Japanese company. “I was impressed by how inquisitive and curious students are about our business and about Japanese companies.” JASC board member Katrina Yoshida, who participated as a mentor, agreed. “Students had so many questions ranging from study abroad to internships to career path and just discovering what they want to do,” she said. “It was so encouraging to see the emerging talent and that they are interested in international work.” The event was made possible by a grant from the Japan Foundation New York. JASC plans to hold a second mentoring event in the fall at Colorado State University.

ちらし寿司

3月3日の桃の節句（ひな祭り）の日には縁起の良い食材がたっぷり使われたお祝い食の 「ちらし寿司」 が欠かせません。見た目が大変華やかな「ちらし寿司」は、3月の明るい気候にぴったりなご馳走でしょう。

ちらし寿司は、関東と関西では特徴を異にします。関東では器に酢飯を入れ、その上にエビやマグロなどの寿司ネタをきれいに乗せます。通常一人前ずつ盛り付けてあります。デンバー界隈の日本食レストランでもこのタイプのちらし寿司をよく見ます。このタイプのちらし寿司は、古くは江戸時代の大奥でも祝い膳として親しまれていた記録があるそうです。

関西ではいわゆる五目寿司がちらし寿司と呼ばれることが多く、酢飯に具材を混ぜた後、錦糸卵や海苔の細切りがトッピングされています。大皿に盛り付けて、皆で分けて食べるスタイルとなっています。

ひなまつりの定番料理としてちらし寿司が定着した背景に明確な起源はないようですが、子どもの成長を家族全員でお祝いするにあたって、大人数でいただけるちらし寿司は最適なメニュー。また、縁起の良い食材を用いて彩り豊かな見た目や、子どもが食べやすいところなどが、ちらし寿司が今日まで親しまれている理由といえそうです。

ちらし寿司に乗せる具材は、各家庭によってさまざまですが、縁起物とされる具材が使われます。例えば「エビ　= エビのように腰が曲がるまで生きる」という長寿への願い。「穴の開いたレンコン＝先まで見通しが利く」、「豆＝健康でマメに働く」、「錦糸玉子：財宝が貯まるように」など。

ひな祭りにいただくちらし寿司は、子どもたちが楽しめるよう彩りや形にこだわったものが近年主流になってきました。例えば、ご飯をケーキに見立てた「ケーキ寿司」にはバラの花を形作ったサーモンをデコレーションするなど、子どもたちを喜ばせるためのさまざまなアイデアが活かされています。子どもたちの笑顔のため、ちらし寿司はこれからも可愛く美味しく進化していきそうです。

Remembering a Kite Master

Every year for more than a decade, for a few days in early summer, the skies near Denver have been filled with colorful magic. Hundreds of kites—some with intricate designs, others simple colored diamond shapes with long tails—have delighted children and adults alike. These kites were inspired and created under the guidance of Edo Kite Master Mikio Toki , who visited Colorado annually from his town of Chiba, Japan. At the invitation of the Japan America Society of Colorado (JASC), Master Toki shared his love of kite making and its place in Japanese culture with Coloradans of all ages from 2014 through 2025, inspiring the creation of over 6,400 kites over the years.

Today, we mourn the passing of Kite Master Mikio Toki, who died on November 12, 2025. Yet we also remember and celebrate the joy he brought us and the cultural connection to Japan he promoted through this ancient art.

Kite making in Japan is deeply embedded in the country’s culture and history, holding significance beyond a mere recreational activity. It is a blend of art, tradition, and spirituality, often associated with celebrations and prayers. Today, there are hundreds of varieties of kites in Japan, with each region having its own distinctive style. Kites are flown during New Year’s celebrations as a symbol of good fortune; they are used to honor the birth of a child; and they are flown at festivals to ward off evil spirits and bring blessings to the community.

Master Toki specialized in Edo kite making. The Edo period (1603–1868) was characterized by feudal Japan, shogun, and samurai. When visiting schools in Colorado, Master Toki delighted students by dressing in Edo‑period artisan clothing. He often played his hand‑made bamboo flute while telling stories, before guiding students through the art of making their own kites using materials he brought from Japan, including washi paper and bamboo. His own kites, displayed in museums around the world, are works of art depicting samurai, nature scenes, Japanese kanji, and kabuki characters.

Derek Okubo, board member of JASC, reflected: “Toki-san was like a sun-filled spring day with a cool, steady breeze. His kindness and patience with young people was truly something special to witness. He let children be themselves and had a way of bringing out the child in all of us. Though I’m deeply saddened by his passing, thinking of him brings a smile to my face.” Stephanie Garnica, current JASC Board Chair, added: “He showed us that a kite is more than paper and string—it is a symbol of culture, history, and connection.”

Mikio Toki was a master of his art—a true Kite Master. For those of us who had the pleasure and honor of experiencing his passion firsthand, he was that and much more. He was a bridge between the people and cultures of Colorado and Japan. For the many students whose classrooms he visited over the years, he offered a glimpse into Japanese culture beyond anime, ramen, and sushi. For adults, he rekindled the magical childhood thrill of flying a kite on a sunny day. And for all, he reminded us of the close relationship between Japan and Colorado—indeed between Japan and the United States—a relationship that only a generation ago was marked by the worst of conflicts.

Master Toki passed on his love for kites and kite making to his daughter, Ms. Asami Toki. We sincerely hope to welcome apprentice Toki to Colorado in the coming years to continue her father’s legacy. In the meantime, we will remember his warm smile every time we see a kite rise into the sky.

Master Toki, may your skies be forever colorful. We thank you. We honor you. And we will remember you.

日本のクリスマス

クリスマスといってもアメリカとは違い、この日は祭日ではなく普通の平日です。日本ではクリスマスは宗教的な位置づけではなく、季節のイベントとして楽しむようになっています。

日本でのクリスマスの過ごし方は、家族または友人と一緒にローストチキンやクリスマスケーキを食べながら、クリスマスという特別な日を楽しみます。ほかには、恋人とデートをしたり、プレゼント交換するなどが一般的です。現在ではクリスマスイブが大変重要視されており、カップルで豪華ディナーを楽しみ、告白やプロポーズをする絶好の日となっています。ですので、全国の高級レストランは、カップルがキャンドルライトのディナーを求めて予約でいっぱいになります。商業施設や公園などは夜になると光にあふれます。工夫を凝らした幻想的で美しいイルミネーションが人びとをロマンチックな気分にさせるのかもしれません。

さて、日本のクリスマスケーキは、パティシェが腕を振るった美しいデコレーションケーキです。土台はスポンジで、ホイップクリームがふんだんに使われ、真っ赤なイチゴがトッピングされているケーキが主流です。ケーキ屋はもとより、セブンイレブンなどのコンビニでさえクリスマスケーキの予約ができます。

クリスマスケーキともう一つ欠かせないのがKFCのチキンです。KFCは1970年代にマーケティングキャンペーンを行い、「クリスマスにはケンタッキー」を国民に根付かせることを見事に成功させました。アメリカと違い七面鳥を食べる習慣は日本にはないので、チキンは最適なディナーなのでしょう。人々はKFCのクリスマスディナーを確保するために、数週間または数ヶ月前に注文を入れます。

12月26日になると、クリスマスケーキもチキンも人びとの生活から見事に消え去り、日本の伝統的なお正月に向けての準備が進められます。クリスマス時期に日本を訪問する際はぜひ日本独自のクリスマスを楽しみましょう。

日本のハロウィン

日本で初めてハロウィンを取り入れたのは、1970年代のキデイランド原宿店であるといわれています。同店は1983年にはハロウィン商品の販売促進のために、ハロウィンパレードを行いました。

1990年代になると、東京ディズニーランドを皮切りに複数のテーマパークがハロウィンイベントを開催し、ハロウインの知名度が一気にあがりました。現在は各地のテーマパークではハロウィンが秋の恒例イベントとなっています。その後2000年代後半には、菓子メーカーがハロウィンに着目し、ハロウィン商品を毎年販売するようになりました。また、バラエティショップ等では仮装用品の販売が始まるなど、この20年でハロウインが一気に定着しました。

仮装については、もともとコスプレ文化に馴染みがあった日本人には違和感がありません。「悪霊から身を隠すための仮装」の範囲を大きく超えて、何でもござれのコスプレを楽しんでおり、日本のハロウイン仮装は独自の進化をとげています。また、昨今のSNSの普及により、いわゆる「映え」のイベントとしても、ハロウィン=仮装をして楽しむイメージが拡散されました。

ハロウィンが盛り上がりを見せる一方で、パレードの騒動や、ゴミの散乱、酔っ払いによるトラブルなどが多発するようになりました。特に2023年は、渋谷で大量の逮捕者が出るなど、大きな社会問題となりました。2024年ハロウインの日は渋谷のスクランブル交差点ではいろいろ規制があったにもかかわらず2023年の人出より20％増加の1万8000人が集まったそうです。今年は渋谷区長が自らメッセージを発表し、渋谷はハロウイン目的で集まるのは禁止です、スクランブル交差点でのイベントはありません、来ないでほしい、と異例の呼びかけをしています。

ハロウイン時期に日本を訪れる際は、渋谷や新宿には近寄らないようにしたほうが賢明かもしれません。　

中秋の名月　十五夜

十五夜といえば、一般的にはお月見をする旧暦8月15日の「十五夜」をさします。「十五夜」は「中秋の名月」と呼ばれる秋の美しい月を観賞しながら、秋の収穫に感謝をする行事です。旧暦8月15日は9月中にあたることが多いのですが、今年は10月6日です。

旧暦では7月～9月が秋にあたります。初秋は台風や長雨が続きますが、秋の半ば、すなわち中秋は秋晴れも多く空が澄んで月が美しく見えます。お月見の風習は中国から伝わり、当初は平安貴族が月見の宴を催して風雅を楽しんでいました。やがてそれが庶民に広がると、実りに感謝する行事になっていきました。

十五夜に月見だんご、すすき、芋などの収穫物を供えるのは、さまざまな物事の結実に対して感謝と祈りを捧げるためです。日本では、月の模様を「うさぎがもちをついている」ととらえますが、うさぎは慈悲の心の象徴と言われ、月に寄せる思いの深さが感じられます。たくさんのお米がとれたことに感謝する意が込められているようです。

9月になると様々なファストフード店が、季節限定の月見に関連するメニューを提供します。月がキーなので、たまごが入ったメニューが豊富です。

マクドナルドでは、期間限定メニュー「月見バーガー」や「月見マフィン」などをが登場します。牛丼でおなじみにすき家でも　日本の秋の風物詩"お月見"を盛り上げる「月見すきやき牛丼」が今年も期間限定で販売されます。

Colorado-Hokkaido Sister Byways event

JASC Executive Director Claudine Locascio was honored to serve on a planning committee recognizing the newest “sister” relationship between Colorado and Japan. The committee hosted an event this month to celebrate the fact that Colorado Scenic & Historic Byways Council and Scenic Byways Hokkaido Promotion Council have established a “Sister Byways” relationship. A Memorandum of Understanding was signed in Hokkaido last month, with several Colorado representatives attending in person. Last week our celebratory event was held in Golden, along the Lariat Loop Scenic Byway. Representatives from state and local governments along with Consul General of Japan in Denver Hiroyuki Okajima were all in attendance. Representatives from Hokkaido joined virtually live from Hokkaido.

The purpose of establishing such a relationship is so that Colorado and Hokkaido can work together to revitalize scenic byways, create joint initiatives, and create guidelines with the goal of contributing to tourism and preservation of cultural heritage. JASC member Courtney Ozaki performed at the event through her Japanese Arts Network, showcasing a beautiful trio of taiko, shamisen and Japanese flute shinobue. JASC Member Misaki Restaurant ( Stanley Marketplace ) catered a beautiful meal for all attendees.

We look forward to continuing to shepherd this unique and beautiful relationship into the future.

日米の祝日

日本では7月の第三月曜日は「海の日」という祝日です。これは「海の恩恵に感謝するとともに、海洋国日本の繁栄を願う」日として1995年に施行されました。

そして８月１１日は「山の日」で祝日です。これは山に親しむ機会を得て、山の恩恵に感謝しようという趣旨で、2016年に施行された比較的新しい国民の祝日です。海の日が制定された後、山岳団体や自然保護関係者から「山の日」も制定して欲しいという要望があり、実現したそうです。もともとは、お盆休み（一般に8月13日～16日）と連動させやすい日として、8月12日が最有力候補でした。

しかし8月12日は、1985年に群馬県・御巣鷹山（おすたかやま）に日本航空123便が墜落する史上最悪事故が起きた日でもあるため、反対意見も出て、最終的に1日ずらした8月11日で決着しました。

海の日、山の日の祝日が追加されたことにより、現在日本の祝日は年間16日に増えました。それに加え、振替休日などもあるので今年は19日が休みとなります。祝日がない月は6月と12月のみです。

さてアメリカはどうでしょう。米国の連邦政府が定めるfederal holidayは年間11日です。（祝日がない月は、3月、4月と8月です。）　これらの祝日には連邦政府、銀行、金融証券取引所が休業となります。しかし一般企業や学校は個々の判断によるのですべてのfederal holidaysを休業又は閉校するとは限りません。90％以上の企業が休業する祝日は、New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, July 4th (Independence Day), Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmasの6日のみです。Presidents DayやJuneteenth、 Columbus Day （Indineous Peoples’ Dayとも呼ばれる）は休みとしていない企業が多く存在します。あるアメリカ人は給料が多少低くてもいいからすべてのfederal holidayを休みにしてほしいとぼやいています。

盃と杯

コートの必要ない日が増え、そろそろ春と呼んでいい気候になってきましたが、みなさまいかがお過ごしでしょうか。

春といえば、日本では出会いや別れの季節ですね。送別会や歓迎会、そしてお花見もあり、年末に続き乾杯が増える時期でもあると思います。また我々は、競い合ったり自分の能力を他人に示そうとしたり、あるいは自分自身と闘ったりと、結果や勝敗を意識して生きることが多くありますが、その他人や自分に勝った時にも、成功を祝うために酒を飲みます。さらに人間は約束が好きな動物で、その席でも酒を酌み交わし、契約とみなすことがあります。結婚式での三々九度は有名ですよね。

さて、日本で約束事をする時に使う「盃」ですが、「杯」という漢字もあって、どちらも読み方は「さかずき」です。この二つに違いはあるのでしょうか。

「盃」は「杯」の俗字だという説もあるそうで、基本的にはどちらも酒を飲むための器という意味です。ただし現代では漢字の使い分けがされており、実際に酒を飲む器の場合は盃、優勝杯などの戦利品、また一杯二杯などの単位や、掛け声の「かんぱい（乾杯）」には杯が使われています。

ちなみに昔の人々は、戦利品としての杯でも酒を飲んでいたようです。今とはやり方が少し違いますが、勝利を祝う行為はいつも変わらないのですね。

今回は盃と杯について書いてみましたが、来月JASCでも優勝杯をめぐって競い合うイベント、ジャパンカップが行われます。参加者も審査員も、みなさん張り切って準備に取り掛かっていますので、当日をお楽しみに！

おみやげ

先日我がマネージャーから日本へ持って行くお土産について質問を受けました。その時は「日本人はトレーダージョーズが好きだから、トレジョ商品を買っていけば間違いない。」と伝えて終わったのですが、その後日本の土産文化について気になったので、少し調べてみました。

「土産」は元来「とさん（またはどさん）」と読む漢語で、土地の産物という意味です。それが「みやげ」になったきっかけは諸説ありますが、「宮笥」と書いて「みやけ」という、神社のお札やお供え物を入れる容器から来ているというのが有力なのだそうです。その後、参拝客が集まる所に自然に店が増え、そこで社寺にちなんだ縁起物のほかに、その土地の産物が売買され、「土産」の字をあてるようになったとみられています。

ところで、お土産は日本独自の文化と思われがちですが、アメリカ人は何も買わないというわけではありません。自分自身、そして家族や友人のためにお土産を買ってくることはあります。ただし、日本のように職場にまで持って行くということはないようです。「買わなくてはいけない」というプレッシャーからではなく、相手の喜ぶ顔を想像すれば、買うという行為すら楽しい思い出になりますよね。

さて、今回のテーマである「お土産」として日本から持ってきてもらうのは難しいですが、日米協会によるイベント「おうちごはん！」に参加すれば、おいしいお好み焼きを自分で作れるようになります！今月は28日金曜日、午後4時（山時間）から開催です。ぜひご参加ください（詳細は下記リンクからご確認いただけます）！！

飲み会文化

明けましておめでとうございます。2025年もJASCそしてこの日本語コラムをどうぞよろしくお願いいたします。

今月は年末年始の日本に欠かせない、飲み会について書いてみました。

「飲み会」とは読んで字のごとく「酒を飲む会合」ですが、日本においての飲み会の定義はそれだけにとどまりません。友達同士の飲み会もあれば、職場で仕事を円滑にするためのコミュニケーションツールのひとつとして、この会合があります。かくいう筆者も日本では数えきれないほど参加したものです。お酒が少し入ると腹を割って話しやすくなり、今まで遠い存在だった相手との関係が近くなることもありますよね。

ただしこの「職場における飲み会」に関しては近年賛否両論あるかと思います。終業しているのにまだ仕事が続くようで気が向かない、そもそもお酒を飲まないなど、できれば参加したくないと思う方もいらっしゃるでしょう。

とはいえ前述の通り、飲み会とはコミュニケーションの一環であり、お互いを嫌な気分にさせるために存在するわけではありません。無理に参加するのは良くないけれど、メリットもたくさんあるはずです！

というわけで、JASCでは日本文化の良いとこ取り、参加したい人がするビジネス飲み会「3rd Thursday Nomikai」を始めました。毎月第三木曜日に、エッジウォータービアガーデンにて行われ、早速記念すべき第一回も大成功に終わりました。そして我々がこの会場を選んだ理由のひとつは、種類豊富な「モクテル（ノンアルコールカクテル）」のメニュー。いつもお茶だけで過ごさねばならなかったあなたも楽しめるのです！継続は力なり、今後ますます面白いイベントになること間違いなしですので、興味のある方はぜひご参加ください！！

JASC looks to deepen Colorado Japan relations in 2025 with two new officers and two new directors.

Denver, Colorado: Last week JASC welcomed new leadership as a new president and executive vice president stepped into their roles. The organization also added new board members. Stephanie Garnica announced as President of the Board of Japan America Society of Colorado.

Stephanie is the Interim Chief Business Development Officer and Director of Global Engagement at Denver’s Economic Development & Opportunity Office. In this role, Stephanie leads efforts to attract, retain, and grow businesses in the city and oversees the city’s international strategy building Denver’s reputation as a global hub of innovation and collaboration. She brings a wealth of economic development and community leadership experience to the job and is known as an inclusive, thoughtful partner. Stephanie has vast experience both leading delegations to Japan and hosting delegations from Japan. She is involved with many globally focused initiatives in the Denver Metro area including the Biennial of the Americas, World Trade Center Denver, and StudyColorado.

John Hayato Branderhorst announced as Executive Vice President of Japan America Society of Colorado.

John is Managing Director at JHB Consulting and Director of Operations at btrax, a San Francisco- and Tokyo-based design and marketing firm. In these positions, John helps companies navigate successful market entry between the United States and Japan. Drawing from his JET Program experience and entrepreneurial background co-founding Tabe Ramen, John frequently speaks at events like Boulder and Denver Startup Week, sharing insights on both cross-cultural business development and community engagement strategies. John spent 20 years living in Japan and now calls Colorado home where he enjoys getting outside and spending time in the mountains.

Japan America Society of Colorado announces election of two new Directors to the Board.

Brandon Shepherd is Director of Innovation at Inspired Functional Brands, an innovative company developing cutting edge functional beverages targeting the immune system and gastrointestinal health. Brandon is a founder of Mile High Food Science where he developed groundbreaking products and collaborated with major brands across the U.S. and Central America. Brandon spent time living and teaching English in Japan and brings his passion for Japanese culture to all aspects of his life.

James Fukazawa is an attorney at Sherman & Howard/Taft, the oldest law firm in Denver. Working in the Real Estate practice group, James helps clients accomplish their transactional real estate goals by navigating complex local, state, and federal legal and regulatory landscapes. James spent four years living and teaching in the Kanto region of Japan before returning to attend law school at the University of Denver. Outside of the office, James enjoys cooking, motorcycling, and skiing.

JASC is eager to welcome these new perspectives into the organization as it looks ahead to programs and activities in the coming year. 我らがソウルフード、おにぎり

JASCに届いたメールの確認をしていたところ、毎年行われているおにぎりアクションの、2024年の驚くべき結果を目にしました。

アメリカ合衆国が選んだおにぎりの具ランキングなのですが、第一位にサーモン、第二位にツナマヨ、ここまでは非常に納得できる。しかし第三位になんと梅干しが登場していたのです。私は今まで、この国で梅干しが人気になる日が来るとは予想しておりませんでした。第四位のスパムを凌いでの立派な銅メダル。あっぱれです。

タイトルの通り日本人のソウルフードであるおにぎりですが、私のおにぎりについての一番古い思い出といえば、毎朝幼稚園へ向かうバスの中で、仕事で忙しい母親が買ってくれたコンビニの鮭おにぎりを食べていたことです。よっぽど楽しみにしていたのでしょう、今でも鮭フレークの味と、コンビニおにぎり特有のパリパリの海苔、そして早朝の若干薄暗いバスの中の雰囲気を覚えています。

ただ与えられるものを食べる子ども時代を経て、今では自分で好きなものを作ることができるようになり、たとえ住む国を変えようとも、私のおにぎりへの愛情は決して絶えることはありませんでした。

そして先日JASCにて行われた「Onigiri Onegai!」で、私はついに国境を越えたおにぎり作りに参加することができました。参加者の皆さんの笑顔を見て、今後もこの素晴らしいソウルフードを広めていきたいと決意を新たにし、良い気持ちで2024年を締めくくることができそうです。

JASC at Denver Startup Week

On September 16, 2023, the Japan America Society of Colorado (JASC) had the honor of participating in the International Day of Denver Startup Week. This event brought together innovators and entrepreneurs from various backgrounds to share insights and foster connections.

JASC Executive Director Claudine Locascio and Board Member John Hayato Branderhorst led a session titled "Understanding Japan through Business, Education & Cultural Synergy." The session aimed to explore the unique opportunities for collaboration between the U.S. and Japan in these key areas. We were privileged to have the session introduced by Mr. Yoichi Mikami, the Consul General of Japan in Denver, emphasizing the importance of international partnerships.

As we look ahead, JASC is excited to welcome more international startups to Denver, particularly those from Japan. Together, we can create meaningful connections that enhance cultural exchange and drive innovation.

日本に引っ越すときは、電車の定期券の取得や、地元の役所で住民登録をするなど、身の回りのことを整える必要がありますが、私の最優先事項はジムに入会することでした。しかし、アメリカと比べると日本のマナーやジムでの活動はかなり違います。

まず、屋内で履く靴に気をつけるべきです。外で使っているスニーカーや泥が付いている靴で、ジムに入ってはいけません。きれいな環境で運動を続けるために、そのルールを守るべきです。

次に気づくのは静寂です。唯一の音がトレッドミルの騒音とアメリカン・ポップのBGMで、筋トレや運動することは個人活動のように見えます。おしゃべりは全く悪いわけではありませんが、騒いだり大声でベラベラと話すことには注意が必要です。

最後に「女性専用」セクションを初めて見たときは、びっくりしました。もちろんこれは関東や関西の女性専用車両など他の場合にも見られます。このシステムは西洋でも役立つかもしれません。

When moving to Japan, it’s necessary to get your affairs in order; whether it’s acquiring your train pass or registering your residence at the local shiyakusho. My priority was finding a gym to join. I was already aware of a few customs such as the tattoo taboo, and with Japan’s long-standing reputation for cleanliness and public order I should have expected some curveballs, but my nearly 10 years of gym experience mattered little when I stepped foot into my first Japanese one.

The first difference you will notice is that your shoes will likely not suffice. There are outdoor shoes and there are indoor shoes and being seen walking in with your “indoor shoes” will give staff every reason to stop you. If you come unprepared (as I did) there are usually indoor shoes for you to rent for a small fee. Of course, only after you get a day pass from the vending machine in the lobby (Japan loves their vending machines).

The second thing you will notice is the silence. I own a shirt from my former gym in Northern Colorado that reads “clangin’ and bangin’”; however, it very clear that if there is any “clangin’” or “bangin’” done, you will gently be asked to leave. With the only sound being the hum of treadmills and the background ambience of American Pop, exercise appears to be an individual activity. In America it’s not uncommon to see groups of two, three, or even 4 people treat the weightroom as an expensive hangout spot where you can occasionally lift weights but that is only another way to ensure you get sent on your way (outdoor shoes and all).

The final element of a Japanese gym that was most surprising is something that is both amazing and upsetting. There is the old saying that if a rule exists, it is because someone behaved in such a way to warrant its existence. I believe this is the reason for the “Female Only” section at the gym. Complete with most of the amenities as the coed section, this is a system that the West might benefit from. Of course, this phenomenon can be seen in other cases such as the female only train cars seen around the Kanto and Kansai areas. Twenty pounds weigh the same in America and Japan, but considering culture, they couldn’t be more different. Even though I struggle with self-conscious thoughts of being too noisy with every exhale or accidental metallic clank of the machine, I’ve grown accustomed to the gym culture. I can only hope that when I return to the United States, I can find a gym at least as clean!

On September 4, 2024, an unforgettable ceremony took place at the residence of Consul-General Yoichi Mikami in Denver. During this special occasion, the Commendation of the Consul-General of Japan was presented to Claudine Locascio, Executive Director of the Japan America Society of Colorado (JASC), recognizing her exceptional contributions to strengthening the bonds between Japan and Colorado.

The commendation ceremony celebrated Claudine’s unwavering dedication to fostering mutual understanding, friendship, and cultural exchange between Japan and the US. Mr. Derek Okubo, President of JASC, along with Claudine’s family and several members of the JASC community, were in attendance to witness this milestone achievement.

Following the ceremony, Consul-General Mikami hosted a reception in honor of the Japan America Society of Colorado, further solidifying the importance of the ongoing partnership between the Consulate-General and JASC.

The Commendation of the Consul-General is a prestigious award given to individuals and organizations that make significant contributions to promoting public relations, cultural activities, economic development, and diplomacy. Claudine’s recognition is a testament to her hard work and the collaborative efforts of the entire JASC team.

This commendation is an important milestone for JASC and reflects the strength of the society's mission to bridge cultural and economic ties between Japan and Colorado.

A Memorable Visit: Ambassador Shigeo Yamada’s Luncheon with JASC

On Monday, July 29, 2024, the Japan America Society of Colorado (JASC) had the distinct honor of hosting Shigeo Yamada, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the United States. This private luncheon was a significant occasion, as Ambassador Yamada was in Colorado for a series of important meetings, including one with Governor Jared Polis.

During his visit, Ambassador Yamada made time to connect with local Japan-related organizations and explore some of the Japanese companies operating in Colorado. His engagement provided an excellent opportunity for us to share the work we do and the impact of our programs.

At the luncheon, JASC representatives had the chance to discuss our annual educational and cultural outreach programs. We highlighted our support for Japanese language programs in Colorado and our role in assisting Japanese and Colorado businesses with cross-cultural communication and business protocol. This interaction underscored our commitment to fostering strong Japan-Colorado relations.

This visit marked Ambassador Yamada’s fifth trip to Colorado. He expressed his deep appreciation for the beauty of the Rocky Mountains and enjoyed the various outdoor activities our state offers. His continued interest in Colorado is a testament to the strong bonds we share.

We are looking forward to the opportunity to welcome Ambassador Yamada back during his tenure as Ambassador of Japan to the United States. His visits are always a source of inspiration and a reminder of the close ties between our communities.

Strengthening US-Japan Ties: Prime Minister Kishida's Congress Speech

Last week, Claudine, our Executive Director at JASC, had the honor of attending Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s speech to the joint session of Congress in Washington, DC. Invited by Colorado Congressman Jason Crow, District 6, Claudine witnessed a momentous occasion that showed the strong relationship between Japan and the U.S.

Prime Minister Kishida captivated the audience with his eloquence, passion, and the breadth of topics he covered. His speech not only highlighted the deep-rooted friendship between the two nations but also emphasized the pivotal roles they play in shaping global affairs.

Fortifying People-to-People Ties

People-to-people exchanges are the most effective way to develop the future stewards of the U.S.-Japan relationship. In this regard, we recognize the achievements of exchange programs between our two countries, including the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Programme, KAKEHASHI Project, the Japan Foundation’s programs, and the U.S.-Japan Council’s TOMODACHI Initiative, and commit ourselves to providing more opportunities to meet today’s needs, including through enhanced subnational exchanges on critical issues such as climate and energy. We also recognize the important role civil society has played in strengthening the U.S.-Japan relationship over the past 170 years, including the 38 Japan-America Societies across the United States, the Asia Society, and the 29 America-Japan Societies across Japan.

Yamagata in Colorado: Building Bridges and Lasting Friendships

In a heartwarming display of international camaraderie, two officials from the Yamagata Prefecture Government, Yutaro Shida and Mayuko Ogata, embarked on a journey to Boulder, Colorado, to delve into the heart of American culture, learn the English language, and foster connections. Over a few months, they engaged in various cultural exchanges that transcended borders, furthering their education and building friendships.

The initiative was not only about learning the nuances of the English language but also about immersing themselves in the vibrant tapestry of Boulder’s cultural scene. Ms. Ogata studied volunteerism and was able to give a presentation at a local high school to share about Yamagata and Japanese culture. Mr. Shida was able to learn about economic situation in the State of Colorado and the City & County of Denver. They also managed to join the events hosted by JASC, which proved instrumental in bridging the gap between two distinct yet interconnected communities.

However, in the last few weeks before they leave, they met with Consul-General Yoichi Mikami of the Consulate General of Japan in Denver, Colorado State Government officials, and JASC staff and board members at a luncheon that provided a platform for open discussions on potential collaborations in various sectors, from business and education to cultural exchange platforms. The discussion ensured that Shida Yutaro and Mayuko Ogata sustained the impact of this cultural exchange long after their return to Japan.

As the Yamagata officials bid farewell, the shared experiences, the laughter, and the cross-cultural understanding fostered during their time in Colorado served as a foundation for a deeper and more meaningful friendship between Yamagata and Colorado. Embracing Tradition: JASC and JETAARM's Nengajo Workshop

In the heart of December, JASC and the JET Alumni Association of the Rocky Mountains (JETAARM) joined forces to host a delightful Nengajo workshop. The event aimed to explore the rich cultural tradition of crafting Japanese New Year’s postcards, known as 年賀状 “Nengajo.”

Yuka Hicks kicked off the workshop with an insightful introduction to the significance of Nengajo in Japanese culture. Participants learned the age-old tradition of sending these special cards to convey good wishes and gratitude for the past year, as well as hopes for the upcoming one. The art of Nengajo, it seems, is not just about aesthetics; it’s a heartfelt gesture deeply rooted in the spirit of the community and connection.

As the participants immersed themselves in the cultural narrative, they discovered the intricacies of Nengajo’s creation. The workshop featured various art stations, each offering a unique avenue for self-expression. The drawing station allowed participants to unleash their creativity on blank postcards, bringing personal interpretations of the festive season to life.

For those inclined towards a more fluid and vibrant approach, the watercoloring station beckoned. Here, attendees experimented with a kaleidoscope of colors, creating visually stunning Nengajo that reflected the beauty of individual perspectives.

JASC's Onigiri Onegai with Over 50 Participants Supporting Table for Two's Global Cause

JASC recently celebrated a huge success with their "Onigiri Onegai" event, where more than 50 enthusiastic participants gathered to learn the art of making onigiri, all while supporting a meaningful cause. This collaborative effort, hosted by JASC and The JET Alumni Association of the Rocky Mountains (JETRAARM), was not only a culinary adventure but also a heartfelt endeavor to make a positive impact on a global scale.

The event's primary purpose was to support Table for Two's Onigiri Action campaign . This initiative revolves around a simple yet impactful idea – for every social media post featuring a photo of an onigiri with the hashtag #onigiriaction, Table for Two pledges to provide a nutritious school meal to children in need worldwide. JASC and JETAARM embraced this campaign as an opportunity to not only indulge in the joy of making onigiri but also to contribute to a cause that resonates with the community.

The success of the Onigiri Onegai event can be attributed to the planning and execution by the organizing teams. Gathering ingredients became a community effort, with participants and volunteers alike contributing to the process by sourcing fresh and authentic supplies from Pacific Mercantile , a local Japanese and Asian store. This collaborative spirit set the tone for the entire event, fostering a sense of unity and shared purpose.

Volunteers played a crucial role in ensuring the smooth flow of the event. From guiding participants through the intricacies of onigiri crafting to assisting in the organization of the venue, their dedication added an extra layer of warmth to the gathering.

The overwhelming success of the Onigiri Onegai event has left the organizers, volunteers and participants inspired and motivated. With the genuine enjoyment and support witnessed this year, JASC and JETAARM express their eagerness to host this event again next year. Yamanouchi Town Meets Vail with JASC

Last week, we had the delightful opportunity to meet with officials from Yamanouchi town, Japan, as they get to know more about their sister city, Vail, Colorado.

The purpose of their visit was not only to strengthen the bonds of friendship but also to share and invite us to experience the cultural treasures of Yamanouchi Town.

While Vail and Yamanouchi town may be thousands of miles apart from each other, it was evident from our discussion that there is a deep-seated appreciation for natural beauty, culture and community in both regions. We are thrilled about the possibility of more folks from Colorado visiting Yamanouchi town to see the snow monkeys and partake in the town’s rich heritage.

JASC Goes to Japan!

I was honored to have the opportunity to represent Colorado at the America Japan Society International Symposium , held in Kyoto, Japan. This event is hosted in Japan every two years.

There were 10 U.S. based Japan-America Societies and 10 Japan-based America-Japan Societies in attendance for the first portion of the conference. Moderated by Ambassador Ichiro Fujisaki and Ambassador Kurt Tong, all societies were able to share post-COVID return to activities and best practices. We were then joined by academic, political, and cultural leaders for a series of panel discussions highlighting the importance of the U.S.-Japan bilateral partnership in the world today. If there is one message that rang true throughout this conference, it's the fact that grassroots level connections and organizations like JASC, who work to create personal connections between our local region and Japan, are so critically important to the greater U.S.-Japan alignment. Educating children, supporting college-level students, supporting our local businesses and governments - these are all program goals of JASC that feed the greater U.S.-Japan relationship. I am inspired to continue the great work that we do and to engage as many of our JASC members as possible!

While in Japan, I took the opportunity to visit with some of our JASC members and supporters as well as take my first trip up to the Sister Prefecture of Colorado, Yamagata Prefecture . Trust me when I tell you that the ties between Colorado and Japan are strong and there is a great interest in making them even stronger!

Successful 2022 JASC Gala!

来る11月15日は、七五三。子どもの健やかな成長を祝って、その名の通り3歳・5歳・7歳の節目に行われる行事です。

七五三の由来には諸説ありますが、平安時代の頃から宮中で行われていた3つの儀式が基になっているそうです。

３歳：「髪置（かみおき）」　男女ともに髪を伸ばし始める
５歳：「袴着（はかまぎ）」　男の子は袴を着始める
７歳：「帯解（おびとき）」　女の子は帯を締める着物を着始める

当時は医療や衛生面の問題から子どもの死亡率が高く、7歳になるまでは神のうち(神の子)として扱われ、7歳から現世で一人前であると認められていました。

祝う年齢には、奇数を縁起の良い数と説いている中国の「陰陽五行説」が関係しているとも言われており、「3歳で言葉を理解し、5歳で知恵がつき、7歳で乳歯が生え替わる」という成長の節目とされていました。

七五三に欠かせないアイテムといえば、千歳飴。長寿を意味する鶴亀や、健康を祈って松竹梅などが描かれた袋に入っており、長細い形と紅白の色が特徴の飴です。江戸時代に浅草の飴屋さんがお宮参りの際のお土産として売り始めたのがはじまりとされており、この飴のように長く元気に育って欲しいという願いが込められています。実は、サイズが“直径15㎜、長さ１m以内”と決められているそうで、そのほかはニセモノだと言う方も...購入の際にチェックしてみて下さい。

11月15日である理由には、鬼を心配せず外出できる「鬼宿日」、徳川綱吉が長男の健康を祈った日、家業をつかさどる神々を祭る「霜月祭りの日」、旧暦での満月の日...など諸説あります。現代では10月下旬から11月下旬までに行うのが一般的で、お天気や家族の都合に合わせて行う方が多いようです。ご親戚も含めて集まりやすい日にお祝いできるといいですね。

JASC Kaiwa Club

JASC’s Kaiwa Club has enjoyed the long days of summer this year. They recently gathered at Wash Park to enjoy a little Japanese style BBQ, picnicking, 日本語 conversation and summer fun. This group of smiling faces has grown over the years with friendships deepening and evolving beyond JASC borders. What a testament to the JASC mission of expanding people to people relationships between Colorado and Japan! The group meets every other Saturday and there is always space for YOU!

JASC All Around Town

JASC has been busy all over town lately! We collaborated with the Denver Botanic Gardens to host an absolutely lovely evening stroll in the Japanese Gardens as Ebi Kondo and Jim Arneill educated us on what we were seeing and the thought behind it all. It truly was a treat to spend the evening with friends and take our time enjoying and learning about the beauty within the Japanese Gardens.

Last week we met up with our JASC Young Professionals group to hear about the ins and outs of global business from Masa Kamimura of Montbell and Rod O’Dorisio of Tea with Tae. Tea with Tae kindly hosted this event and made sure all attendees got to enjoy a delicious cup of tea at their beautiful location on the 16th Street Mall. Participants spent much of the evening networking with peers and mentors and broadening their professional scope.

If you missed JASC at the PACE Center in Parker earlier this month, you can see the recording of Japanese Aesthetics- Bonsai & Ikebana which was part of the Parker Arts Lecture series. Our wonderful Junko Goodwin gave this insightful talk to a group of over 75 attendees.

日本では8月13日から16日まで、多くの学校・企業等がお盆休みでしたね。祝日である山の日(8月11日)と有休を駆使して、6日から11連休にされた方も多いのではないでしょうか。ご存じの通り、お盆は亡くなられた方やご先祖様が、あの世(浄土)からこの世（現世）に戻ってくる期間であり、正式には「盂蘭盆会（うらぼんえ）」と呼ばれます。これは仏教の「盂蘭盆経（うらぼんきょう）」というお経に由来しており、実は宗派や地域によってお盆の時期や慣習は様々です。我が家では親戚一同で食事を共にした後お墓参りに行き、お寺のロウソクから提灯に火を移し、それを家の仏壇に届けるのが一連行事でした。道中で感じた、提灯の柔らかい明かり、夏の夜風、虫の鳴き声が、今でも幼少期の思い出としてはっきり覚えています。また、子どもの頃は精霊馬と精霊牛(爪楊枝や割り箸を脚に見立てて、胡瓜と茄子で作ったお供えもの)を知らず、物珍しそうに見ていたような気がします。精霊馬は、ご先祖様にいち早くこの世へたどり着いてほしいという願いが込められており、精霊牛は、名残り惜しい気持ちを込めて、ゆっくりあの世へ帰っていただきたいという意味があるとのこと。

法要だけでなく、盆踊りもご先祖様を供養する大切な行事。国の重要無形民俗文化財となっている長野県の「新野の盆踊り」、富山県の「おわら風の盆」など、一生に一度は訪れてみたいものです。

一方、沖縄県では今も旧暦の7月13日～15日にお盆が行われるため、年によって日付が変動します(今年は8月10日～12日)。法要の仕方も独特で、ウチカビというあの世で使うためのお金を送り火のように燃やします。これには、あの世でご先祖様が貧相な思いをしないようにとの意味が込められているとのこと。他にもサトウキビをお供えしたり、重箱料理の供え物「ウサンミ」や沖縄の炊き込みご飯「ジューシー」などを食べたりします。日本で生まれ育ったとは言え、まだまだ知らない日本の姿がたくさんありますね。皆さんの地域・ご家族はどんなふうにお盆を過ごしていますか？

Gold Medal for Nichi-Bei-GO Dragon Boat Team!

Thank you to all our Kaiwa and JASC members who came out to cheer on and support our JASC Dragon Boat team, Nichi-Bei-GO at the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival last month! We had an amazing time racing on the water against some fantastic teams and hanging out at our tent with friends over the weekend as we represented the CO-Japan relationship on the water and at the Festival. Let me tell you, the smiles on these paddlers faces were brighter than the stars over Rocky Mountain National Park at night as the Festival came to an end and Nichi-Bei-GO took GOLD in the 250m Hong Kong Community A Division races . This team shared sweat, meals, early mornings, thunderstorms, laughs, tattoos and camaraderie. Ultimately they learned to paddle as one- a beautiful metaphor for the JASC mission of bringing together two cultures. Nichi-Bei-GO will be racing once more this season and expect more smiles and good times on the water together.

Statement on Shinzo Abe

Dear Members of Japan America Society of Colorado,

Below we are sharing a statement released by our counterpart in Japan at the America-Japan Society of Tokyo, Ambassador Ichiro Fujisaki. The former Prime Minister of Japan Mr. Shinzo Abe served as their Honorary President.

As an organization dedicated to people-to-people relationships between Colorado and Japan, our heartfelt sympathies go out to all those who mourn today. Gun violence is something we in Colorado are unfortunately familiar with and our thoughts are with our friends in Japan and our Japanese friends here in Colorado.

Our Honorary President Mr. Shinzo Abe was shot on the 8th of July and lost his life. Of course, such a thing should never have happened.

He was the longest serving Prime Minister in the history of Japan. As Prime Minister, he strengthened Japan-US relations through national security legislation and the Free and Open Indo-Pacific strategy. He was one of the greatest leaders in our postwar history. I have known him personally since when he was the private secretary to his father, Mr. Shintaro Abe, Foreign Minister.

Prime Minister and Mrs. Abe attended our centennial ceremony in 2017, where he gave remarks. We showed a short film on the history of our Society the conclusion of which cited Prime Minister Abe’s words “alliance of hope” from his earlier speech to the US Congress. Right after his resignation, we asked him to be our Honorary President and he willingly accepted. We filmed messages to our members. Our 17 interns visited him and individually asked questions.

Recently, on June 1st, he appeared at the podium of our seminar with Ambassador Emanuel, who also assumed the post of Honorary President. Both of them made strong remarks and engaged in a Q&A session. Answers were clear and to the point.

We all miss this shining star. May his soul rest peacefully in heaven.

安倍名誉会長が７月８日選挙支援演説中狙撃され落命されました。

あってはならないことが起きてしまいました。

安倍総理は歴代最長期間、総理大臣を務めました。その間、安保法制、インド太平洋戦略などを通じ、日米関係強化に努め実績を残しました。戦後史に輝く大政治家でした。ご父君安倍晋太郎外相の秘書官をされていた頃から存じ上げでいました。

当協会との関係では、２０１７年の百周年にご夫妻で出席頂き、挨拶頂きました。その際上映した短いフィルムの締めくくりは、同総理の米議会での演説の「希望の同盟」のくだりとしました。

総理退任後すぐ名誉会長を引き受けて頂けないかとお願いしたところ快く引き受けて頂きました。会員へのビデオメッセージを撮らせて頂きました。またインターン１７名に会って頂き、一人一人から質問を受けて頂きました。

最近は、６月１日、同じく名誉会長に就任されたエマニュエル駐日米国大使と会員や全国から来られた日米協会関係者と質疑応答して頂きました。率直で力強い議論を展開されました。

JASC at Cherry Blossom Festival

We were THRILLED to be back at the Cherry Blossom Festival at Sakura Square in downtown Denver this month! It was fantastic to see our local Japanese community come together in person for a weekend of festivities and simply being together. The JASC booth was definitely the cutest one there with kids lining up to play Yoyo-tsuri. Thank you to our incredible volunteers for hours of water balloon preparation and lending your smiles all weekend! JASC staff connected with our community to help them understand our mission and engage with our organization. Our Kaiwa Club group hung out and listened to taiko, strolled the festival and caught up with each other. We completely enjoyed ourselves and can’t wait to be there again next year. Thank you, Sakura Foundation , for bringing it back this year!

Connecting Colorado & Yamagata Students

JASC has facilitated several online exchanges this past year and we continue to get requests from both sides of the pond! Nothing makes us happier than connecting students between our two favorite places. The above newsletter article was in the Yamagata Newspaper. Boulder High and Yamagata High enjoyed an exchange this past year where nearly 100 students total connected online. They discussed gaming, anime, and cultural differences and similarities. They shared language resources and connected on social media. The students hope to have an in person exchange in the near future.

Colorado and Yamagata Prefecture are sister-states and celebrated the 35th anniversary of this valuable relationship in 2021. If you are a teacher of Japanese language and interested in this type of opportunity for your students, let us know!

5月5日、アメリカではCinco de Mayoを祝う人々で賑わいますが、日本は子どもの日でしたね。元々は「端午の節句」で、男の子の健やかな成長と幸せを祈る日でしたが、1948年に「こどもの人格を重んじ、こどもの幸福をはかるとともに、母に感謝する」として、全ての子どもの幸福を祈る祝日となりました。厄除けや健康長寿の象徴としてちまきや柏餅を食べたり、立身出世を願って鯉のぼりを飾るのが伝統的な慣習で、群馬県館林市こいのぼりの里まつりでは約4,000匹の鯉のぼりが市内に飾られるそうです！

皆さんは、鯉のぼりの起源についてご存じでしょうか？その理由・由来については、中国の故事「登竜門」が大きく関係しているとのこと。その故事によると、黄河の中流に竜門と呼ばれる激流の連なる滝があり、そこを登りきった魚は竜になると言われていました。そこから、鯉＝立身出世の象徴となり、お家発展を願う武家社会の縁起物として重用されるようになったそうです。

今年の子どもの日には、中学校を訪問し、子どもたちと新聞紙で兜を折りました。実際に被ることができるサイズなので、子どもたちは大興奮。楽しそうに写真撮影をしていました。皆さんもご家族とぜひ試してみてください。

Japan America Society of Colorado (JASC) is offering an unpaid summer internship position for a candidate with a passion for Colorado- Japan relations and a desire to gain professional experience in the non-profit sector. Japanese language ability is strongly preferred, but not an absolute requirement.

MARKETING, PR, & EVENT SUPPORT
This summer intern will assist with events (some which occur on weekends/ evenings), social media creation and analytics, website improvements and marketing. Time permitting, some archiving/ digitizing of historical JASC documents will be requested.

Students travelled from as far as Grand Junction to compete, have fun, and interact with other language learners. 桜開花予想 2022

先日、日本気象協会から桜開花予想が発表されました。早くも福岡では17日から開花が観測され、九州〜関東エリアまではこの先1週間が開花ラッシュのようです。コロナで自粛ムードの日本ですが、最近は少しずつ人出が増えてきているようで、数年ぶりのお花見を楽しむ方も多いのではないでしょうか。

ここでお花見について小ネタ。以前は貴族の行事でしたが、鎌倉・奈良時代に入ると武士階級にも広がっていきました。有名な豊臣秀吉の「醍醐の花見」では、このために700本の桜が醍醐寺に植えられ、豪華絢爛に茶会や歌会などが催されたとか。お花見とセットで親しまれる「三色団子」も、この時振舞われたのが最初だと言われています。江戸時代には桜の品種改良も盛んに行われるようになり、最もポピュラーな品種「ソメイヨシノ」も、この時代に作られたそうです。そして、この頃から桜の名所として名高かった「上野の山」(現在の上野恩賜公園)には、時代を超えて毎年多くの花見客が訪れています。

一方、農民の間でも豊作祈願の神事としてお花見が行われていました。

桜の名前の由来には諸説ありますが、「さくら」の「さ」が田の神様、「くら」が神様の座られる「御座（みくら）」を意味するとか。桜には、春に山から降りてくる「田」の神様が宿ると信じられており、桜の花の咲き方で農作物の収穫を占ったり、開花時期に合わせて稲の種まき準備を行ったりと、農民にとって桜はとても大切なものでした。

このような時代に思いを馳せながらお花見に興じると、さらに趣深く、風流ですね。

Remembering 3.11

Sitting here on March 11th it's impossible not to think back to eleven years ago today. My kids were young and they could see how upset I was, sitting in front of the television all day and all night watching the horrendous aftermath of the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami. Not since September 2001 had I felt so helpless. Yet somehow, time and again, we see tragedy bring out the best in people and that's where I chose to focus. The United States response, with Operation Tomodachi , was brilliantly executed by our government and military. Volunteers the world over traveled to Tohoku to help. Even here in Colorado, Japan America Society of Colorado led efforts to raise funds and have every dollar sent directly to the three hardest hit prefectures in the Tohoku region. This tragedy somehow managed to highlight the incredible U.S.-Japan friendship and the importance of that alliance. It's this friendship that our efforts at JASC bring to the forefront through our work and programs. Let's take a moment today to remember the 15,900 people in Japan who died that day and the 2,500+ who remain missing. And let's also remember to hold our friends close.

JASC’s Junko Goodwin lead a visit to Montessori Peaks Academy to share JASC’s Japan in the Schools program with ALL their lower elementary students. The kids had so many questions to ask and were amazed to learn that Japanese students served the daily school lunches and were responsible for cleaning their own schools! The presentation ended with some hands-on origami folding! It was a joy to be there and Junko, our JiS Program Manager, clearly has a passion for connecting with kids.

バレンタインデー

日本のバレンタインでは、女性から男性にチョコレートをあげるのが一般的です。この風習の始まりについては諸説ありますが、昭和10年にモロゾフ製菓が英字新聞に「チョコレートを贈ろう」と広告を出したのが始まりだとか。また、当時の主な買い物客が女性だったことや、アメリカのウーマン・リブ運動の影響で、女性が恋愛の主導権を握ろうというムードがあったため、製菓会社の販売戦略により、「女性から男性に愛の告白をする日」というイメージが定着していったようです。

年末年始の雰囲気が落ち着くと、軒並みデパートの地階食品売り場(通称デパ地下)に有名ブランドのチョコレートが陳列され、多くの女性でごった返します。また、本命以外の相手にも渡す文化があり、友人にあげるものを友チョコ、家族のをファミチョコ(家族チョコ)、職場等の知人のを義理チョコと呼び、日頃の感謝を込めて贈ります。また最近はマイチョコ(自分チョコ)という呼び名も登場し、自分自身へのご褒美としてチョコを購入する女性も増えています。

3/14には日本独自のホワイトデーという日があり、バレンタインのお返しとして、キャンディー等のお菓子を贈る風習もあります。“恩返し”や”Gift giving”の文化を重んじる日本らしい特別な日ですね。

Visiting our Local Schools

Yoko Watanabe, our Japan Outreach Initiative (JOI) Coordinator, visited Laredo Middle School in Aurora, CO recently. She shared and discussed modern Japanese culture with the students. Yoko introduced some famous, modern-day Japanese icons who worked hard to make their dreams come true. She then presented the students with ema (pictured above), on which to write their own dreams and share them. May their dreams come true!

Ema (絵馬) are typically small wooden wishing plaques which people purchase at temples and shrines to write their wishes on and dedicate to the gods. They are then tied or hung in a dedicated area within the temple/ shrine grounds.

Setsubun is Feb 3rd!

節分 (Setsubun) literally means "seasonal division", referring to the day just before 立春 (Risshun), the first day of spring in the old Japanese calendar.

The main rituals during Setsubun are 豆まき (mamemaki) and eating 恵方巻 (ehoumaki). Mamemaki is the act of throwing roasted soybeans at demons in order to chase the bad spirits out of the home and usher in good luck while shouting "鬼は外!福は内” (Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi!) or Devils out! Fortune in! After that, you eat the same number of soybeans as your current age- one bean for each year. Alternatively, some people use snacks other than soybeans and enjoy throwing and catching these instead.

Ehomaki is an uncut sushi roll and there are three rules for eating it:

Don't cut the roll into small pieces. You have to eat it whole.
Eat it facing the year's lucky direction.
Don't talk anything while eating.

If you don't follow these rules, you will lose all your good luck. Please be careful!

JASC Corporate Members Help Marshall Fire Victims

Although the Marshall Fire is no longer on the front page, many families and businesses that were impacted are still dealing with the losses they incurred and rebuilding their lives. We have some amazing JASC corporate members who operate in that area.

Misaki @ Superior sustained smoke damage to their restaurant and are busy working to reopen. We’ll be sure to let you know when they reopen so we can all support them by eating delicious food! (Someone’s got to do this type of delectable community support work…)

Trailhead Wealth Management is located in Louisville and luckily their staff, families and facilities were unharmed. They have a wonderful list of resources for those who are looking to donate money, time or items to those who were affected. Please check it out.

Montbell USA continues to support Marshall Fire victims through their Outdoor Gientai program and have now hosted two donations events handing out clothing and outdoor gear to those who needed it.

Kaiwa on Ice!

The weather was perfect and the views were beautiful at Evergreen Lake. JASC is alternating between online Kaiwa Club (Japanese Conversation Club) sessions and in-person outdoor adventures. Bring your Japanese skills and join us online and/ or outside for our next one! JASC is a community because of our members! Thank you for being a part of it!

クリスマスホリデー

新年、明けましておめでとうございます。本年もコロラド日米協会をよろしくお願い致します。さて、皆さんはどんな休暇を過ごされましたか？私はDenver Zoo Lightsでイルミネーションを観たり、Colorado SymphonyやDenver Philharmonicのクリスマスコンサートを鑑賞したり、コロラドらしいクリスマスを満喫しました。また、イブには友人家族のパーティーにも参加させていただきました。そこで、自分の欲しいギフトを奪い合うWhite elephant gift exchangeを初体験。White elephantを直訳すると「白い象」になりますが、英語では「無用の長物＝ムダなもの」という別の意味があり、その経緯をたどるとタイの昔話に行き着きます。昔タイの国王が、気に入らない家臣に白い象を嫌がらせで贈りました。家臣は維持費の高いその象を手放したかったのですが、白い象は神聖だとされていたため、それもできず…そんなことから、いらないプレゼントのことをWhite elephantと言うようになったそうです。自分の用意したプレゼントが不人気な場合や、大の大人たちが奪い合う様子は少々世知辛いですが、遊び心溢れるアメリカらしいゲームでした。

一方、日本のクリスマスは、家族より恋人と過ごす日というイメージが根強いです。そのため、パートナーのいない人々は直前になると「また今年もクリぼっち(クリスマスでひとりぼっち)」とため息を漏らすこともしばしば…。そして、これもまた日本独特ですが、クリスマスの定番メニューと言えばケンタッキーフライドチキン。その理由には、企業の販売戦略や七面鳥が手に入りにくいという背景がありますが、何はともあれ、ケンタッキーのCMソング「すてきなホリデイ(竹内まりや)」がテレビで流れ始めると、多くの日本人がクリスマスの到来に心を躍らせます。

New Years Message from Our ED

Hello and Happy New Year! あけましておめでとうございます！今年も宜しくお願い致します。 I wanted to take a moment to thank you all for the incredible support you have provided to Japan America Society of Colorado during these past two difficult years. It seems just when we think things are getting back to "normal", we back-step yet again.

Over the course of the next few weeks (months?) we plan to be a little extra cautious with in-person meetings and events until our understanding of the latest wave of Covid is a bit better. Kaiwa Club is planning a fun 新年会 outing to go ice skating - hopefully a nice, safe, outdoor activity. Kaiwa Club itself will alternate meeting on Zoom and meeting in-person.

At least ten of our member families were affected by the fires in Louisville and Superior being displaced by evacuation. Having checked in with each of them, they all appear to have had their homes spared and their families are safe. One of our dear friends and loyal volunteers has lost her home and we are in touch and ready to help if needed. We have since learned of two other Japanese families who have lost homes and we are also in touch with them and ready to help once they know more about their needs. This community of Japan America Society of Colorado is very special. Whether it is connections for your business or your family, the network of resources we have is vast and I truly thank each and every one of you for being here with us.

I have been looking through our online Membership Directory in recent days and noticed many of you have updated your profiles with photos, business cards, descriptions of services, and more interesting facts to help us get to know you better. I love learning more about you all! If you have not done so, I encourage you to login and update your own profile. It really is wonderful to see the wide range of people that we have within our small yet mighty 日米協会。

I plan to continue our "Member Spotlights" this year. If you haven't been already and you'd like to volunteer to be featured, please reach out to me! I will focus on highlighting our member companies this year, along with new members as they join.

We are working on quite a few events for 2022 and hopefully by March we'll be rolling with some new and interesting topics that allow you to learn and connect. As always, if you have a program idea that you'd like to share or help launch, please reach out! Our organization is as strong as our members.

Nengajo Contest Winning Designs

明けましておめでとうございます！The lovely and talented Alissa Berdahl submitted the winning nengajo design! We got so many submissions we had to open another category for Youth, to which the winning prize went to Austen Maybee (age 14). We loved seeing the creativity in our community and will definitely host this contest in future years. Thank you all for your submissions!

標高1600ftの秘湯

先日、 Rainbow Hot Springs へハイキングに行ってきました。なだらかとは決して言えない自然豊かなコースを歩くこと約3時間。川の一角に、石で区切られた直径2メートルほどの温泉が現れました。美しい川の流れを聞きながら、雪化粧した山並みも一望でき、こんな奥地に温泉を見つけた先人に感服するばかりでした。”温泉”と言えども、その様子は日本人の私がイメージする温泉とは全く違うものでした。そこには脱衣所も洗い場もなく、草むらで水着に着替えました。浴槽の底には泥が沈殿しており、草木も混ざっています。一番の難関は、心臓が止まりそうなほど冷たい川を渡らないと、温泉にたどり着けないことです。そして、たどり着いた温泉の温度は35度のぬるま湯。多少体は温まりますが、戻りの渡河でまた凍りつきます。すでにご理解いただいたと思いますが、日本人の想像する心地良い温泉ではありませんでした。その一方で、「よし、行くぞ…3 2 1 GO!!!」と覚悟を決めて温泉に出入りし、川でヒーヒー！と叫んでいた自分の姿を思い出すと、笑いがこみ上げてくる最高の冒険でした。暖かくなったら、皆さんもぜひ訪れてみてくださいね。

JASC Nengajo Contest

JASC is holding its 1st ever Nengajo Contest! In keeping with Japanese tradition, JASC sends a New Years Card out to all our members, supporters and friends on January 1st. This year, we'd like to get some help from our community. A winning design will be chosen and that nengajo will be sent out to our JASC community on behalf of JASC with credit awarded to the artist for the design. The artist will receive a one year JASC Family Level Membership ($75 value) and a $30 gift card to Pacific Mercantile at Sakura Square!

Just as holiday greetings or cards are exchanged in the West, nengajo, or New Years postcards are exchanged in Japan. Nowadays, although many nengajo are digitially sent, the Japan Post still delivers about 4 billion each New Years Day. We had so much fun creating the most adorable onigiri (many of them Halloween-themed) you have ever seen. And we had even more fun devouring them! Under the excellent tutelage of Yuta Okkotsu (owner of “Gonigiri”) we learned how to shape these adorable morsels of deliciousness. No instruction was needed to eat them. This event sold out and we did get several emails requesting more events like this. We hear you!! Thank you for the feedback!

Japan in the Schools Program: Bigger & Better!

Did you know that JASC offers a Japan in the Schools program as part of our mission to connect Colorado and Japan through educational means? This is a FREE program offered to classrooms throughout Colorado by our wonderful team member, Junko Goodwin. JiS for elementary students has been around for some time, but Junko has expanded this program adding some original creative content allowing us to reach out to students at all levels. We are so happy to be able to visit classrooms in person again and are also able to do completely remote or hybrid presentations also. Thank you to all those who joined us on Riverdale Dunes Golf Course last week for a great day of fundraising and golfing! We had incredibly beautiful weather, incredibly delicious food (thanks to Miki Hashimoto of Tokio ) and an incredible amount of fun between sake tastings, J-pop dancing and swinging those clubs. JASC’s Junko Goodwin joined Lauren at Tagawa Gardens this past month to bring a fun and lively online workshop focused on Japanese gardens and aesthetics to our community. The program culminated with how to create your own kokedama (moss ball) at home. Support our event partner by purchasing a prepared DIY kit from Tagawa Gardens ($40). つい最近、あるアメリカ人の若いご夫婦からこんな質問を受けました。「どうやったら、子供をバイリンガルに育てられますか？」というもの。長年、この課題にいろいろな思いを巡らせてきた私には、伝えたいことが山ほどあります。そこでまず思うのは、 どうやったら の答えを出す前に、 何のために 子供をバイリンガルに育てたいかを考えてほしいということ。もし両親が２つの母語を持つ家庭であれば、子供がその両親の家族や友達と意思疎通ができるようにバイリンガルに育てたいと思うのは自然でしょう。それ以外にも、グローバル化した現代社会においては就職の可能性が広がる、社会的視野が広がる、人間関係が豊かになるなど色々な目的が考えられるでしょう。これらの目的を明確にしておくことは、その手段を考える上で大切だと思います。

では、次にその手段です。ポイントは二つ。子供が幼少のころから日常的に2か国の言語・習慣・道徳などを取り入れて バイカルチュラル 生活をすること、そして成長段階に応じた大まかなプランを立てることです。たとえば、言語に関しては、両親や家族が2か国語を話せるならば、家の中と外の言葉を分ける、または家族内で言語を分担して話すなどして、日常的にその言語と接する機会を作るとことです。もし、子供が学校で他言語を習っているとすれば、それを映画やテレビ、マンガや音楽などを通して接する環境を作ることもできます。そして、習慣や道徳は、体験を通して子供にとってわかりやすく、楽しく伝えられるのがベストです。我が家では、お正月のおせち料理からハロウィンのTrick or Treatまで年中それぞれの文化を行事を通して楽しみ、学校や地域の多文化体験教室にもたくさん参加しました。さらに、言葉を文化や習慣の一部として取り入るのも良い方法です。例えば、食事をする前後に日本語で「いただきます」「ごちそうさま」をいう習慣をつけ、その意味や文化を理解し身につけられれば、これぞ一石二鳥ですね。

最後に、親や教育者にとってなにより大切だと思うのは、成長段階に応じた大体のプランを立てることです。子供の成長にはいろいろなステージがあります。と同時に彼らはそれぞれの家庭の事情や取り巻く環境によって大きく影響されます。例えば、家で過ごす時間が多い幼少期と児童期は、家族内で言語を分担して話したり、行動範囲が広がり学習能力が高まった青年期には、週末を多文化・多言語環境で育つ家族やグループと一緒に過ごす時間を作ったり、さらに自立期には、子供を異国のお友達や家族に預けることもいいでしょう。それぞれの家庭に合った手段を子供の成長に沿って計画していくことをお勧めします。

JASC Hosts Annual NAJAS Conference

As you may know, Japan America Society of Colorado is one of 38 societies who are part of the National Association of Japan America Societies (NAJAS). This week, from Aug. 31 - Sept. 2 JASC is honored to be hosting the NAJAS Annual Meeting. Attendees will include Executive Directors and Board representatives from 30 Japan America Societies from around the country and virtual participation from other U.S. societies and partner societies in Japan. This is a way for all JAS to connect and learn from one another. The meeting will open with a live, virtual Keynote Address via Zoom from Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the United States, Tomita Koji . His talk will be followed by in-person talks from Congresswoman Diana DeGette (Denver-1) , and former Tokyo Bureau Chief of the Washington Post and current JASC Board Member T.R. Reid . Other distinguished speakers will include Joseph Young, former Charge d'Affaires, U.S. Embassy in Tokyo and Ambassadors Masafumi Ishii and Kurt Tong on the topic of Geopolitical Strategy. Presentations will be offered by the Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission , Japan Foundation , and Sasakawa Peace Foundation . All of this shared knowledge is re-invested right here at Japan America Society of Colorado as we use what we learn to provide quality programs for our members and gain access to new speakers for future events. We are excited to welcome our national partners to Denver!

2年間、Japan America Society of Coloradoのメンバーとして、日米草の根交流プロジェクトに従事します。スポーツが大好きで、幼少期は柔道クラブに6年間所属していました。帝京大学で教諭免許を取得しましたが、卒業後はグローバルビジネスに興味を持ち、貿易関連企業で営業職をしながら、NYに短期留学もしました。趣味はダンス・子供服の制作・着付けで、環境問題にも強い関心があります。この分野でも皆さんと文化交流や情報交換ができたら嬉しいです。お会いできるのを楽しみにしています。

Yoko Watanabe has joined JASC from Japan and will be with us for 2 full years. We are SO EXCITED to have her with us! She arrived in August through the Japan Outreach Initiative Program . A joint initiative of The Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership and Laurasian Institution , the JOI Program brings volunteer Japanese coordinators to regions of the U.S. where Japanese culture has been less accessible. Get to know Yoko below!

Hello everyone! I’m Yoko, the coordinator for the Japan Outreach Initiative (JOI). I will work for Japan America Society of Colorado for 2 years to increase opportunities for cultural exchange. I really like sports and belonged to a Judo club for 6 years during childhood.

I graduated with a degree in education from Teikyo University and got a teacher license. But I also have an interest in business, so after graduating, I worked as sales for a global logistics company conducting global business. I had the opportunity to take a short-term study abroad to New York City. I love dance, creating kids' clothes and wearing Kimono! I’m also interested in environmental issues. Hopefully, we can enjoy exchanging cultures and discussing these issues. I look forward to seeing you soon.

In the start of August, JASC will have a new staff member arriving from Japan. She will join our team for 2 years on a full time basis! This lovely lady will be serving some of our farther out Colorado communities and we want to help her get there. If you have a car that you are considering selling, please contact us! We are looking to purchase a vehicle that is safe to drive in all Colorado weather conditions and will make it up through our Rocky Mountains without trouble. JASC’s budget is $5000 or less.

いよいよ7月23日、東京2020オリンピック・パラリンピックが開始されます。新型コロナウイルスの影響で1年の延期となったあと、海外観客の日本への受け入れの断念、緊急事態宣言が発令されている首都圏会場で実施する競技の無観客での開催など、これまでにない逆境の中で行われる世界最大のイベントは、私たちの未来に何を残すでしょうか。

　過去、オリンピックはテクノロジーの実証実験の場としても活用された歴史があります。1964年の東京オリンピックでは衛星生中継で世界各国に開会式の模様が放送されたり、2018年の平昌冬季オリンピックでは開会式に1200機を超えるドローンによる光のショーが話題になりました。今回の東京オリンピック・パラリンピックでは選手村を巡回するバスとしてトヨタの自動運転車「eパレット」を利用することになっています。更に、コロナ禍という制約があるからこそ、誰もが「会場に行けなくても楽しむ方法」を模索し、テクノロジー×スポーツが加速するきっかけの大会になる可能性も秘めていると思います。

今回のオリンピックも賛否両論ありますが、数十年後に振り返ったときには、きっと色々なレガシーを残しているのではないでしょう。もし、大会期間中に選手のコロナ感染を抑えられれば、それもきっと後世に残る偉業になるでしょう。

森林浴

今コロラドは一年で一番美しい季節を迎えていますね。ほんの少し雪をかぶった山々や若い緑が揺らぐ大地、州花のコロンバインをはじめとする色とりどりのワイルドフラワーがそこかしこに咲いていて、私たちの目を楽しませてくれます。こんな恵まれた環境に暮らす私たちは、その恩恵を求めて、山や森に足を運ぶことも少なくないと思います。

実は、日本語には森林浴（英語ではForest Bathing）という、まさにこの自然の恵みを全身に浴びるといった意味の言葉があります。この言葉は、自然美を見直し、森を造る意欲を高めようとの狙いから、温泉浴・海水浴・日光浴などになぞらえて、日本の林野庁が主導して日本国内で提唱した「森林浴構想」に起源があるそうです。また、森林浴の最適な方法としては、心身にストレスを感じない程度の運動量で、生活圏内や近場にある森林を歩くこととされています。そして最近では、この森林浴の科学的効能が様々な研究によって実証されているようです。例えば、森林から発散されている独特な森のにおい成分フィットチッドや滝などの近くの細か水しぶきに含まれるマイナスイオンを人が吸収すると、精神が落ち着きリラックスしてくるという研究結果が出されています。

電化製品やプラスチックに囲まれ、排気ガスが飛び交う都心で暮らす私たちには、まさに森林浴は心身ともにリフレッシュさせてくれる森林セラピーといったところでしょうか。四季折々の森の表情を楽しみながら、樹木の香りを思いっ切り吸い込んで、森のパワーを全身で感じてみたいです。

Nichi-Bei-GO Races at Riverdale Regional Park

The JASC Dragon Boat team , Nichi-Bei-GO, had a fun-filled start to the season out on Mann-Nyholt Lake in Adam’s County this past Saturday. With just a few sprinkles to keep things cool, the team paddled in 3 races along with a tug-o-war competition on the water. Most of our paddlers were novices, so we did a quick workshop on land and then moved into the boat to learn and practice how to paddle. We paddled our hearts out, smiled, laughed, got wet and in general had a fantastic day. It was a joy to mingle and paddle with other teams and engage with the Dragon Boat community. A big thanks to CODA ( Colorado Dragon Boat Alliance ) for organizing the regatta and for all the support they have lent us as we grow our team this year. We are looking forward to more smiles on the water this summer season!

Reuniting in Person!

Our Kaiwa Club (Japanese Conversation Group) met in-person for the first time in a long time on Saturday, June 12! The feeling of reuniting was palpable as conversations erupted, smiles soared and laughs filled the air. The group of nearly 30 gathered under the trees in downtown Denver’s Washington Park. We are so happy to be returning to some safe in-person gatherings. We are so happy to be with our members and community- it’s what is at our core. If you missed us as much as we missed you, come out for our Summer Gala: A Celebration of Excellence , our Dragon Boat Team , and/ or our Golf Tournament . 今日は、コロラド日米協会の運営する教育プログラム「 Japan in the Schools 」の紹介とその体験記です。Japan in the Schoolsは日本とコロラド州を教育で繋ぐという当協会の使命のひとつを果たすため、メトロデンバーとボルダーエリアの教育機関に提供されています。2015年までに、このプログラムを通して繋がった学校と生徒の数は110校、6000人以上に上ります。内容は日本の地理、歴史、言語、生徒の日常についてのスライドプレゼンテーションと折り紙や習字などの文化体験の二部構成で、小学生から高校生まで、それぞれの教育目的に合わせてカスタマイズされています。

このプログラムに携わるようになって数年、たくさんの学校を訪れる中、私が気づいたことは、生徒たちは想像以上に日本について知っていて興味をもっていること、そしてそんな彼らの興味を支え、素朴な質問に答えられる機会が必要であるということです。特にプレゼンテーションで大事なのは、質疑応答の時間。生徒たちからは、時に思いもよらない質問が飛んできます。例えば、「日本で行かない方がいいところは？」これには答えに困りましたが、あくまで私の意見として「パチンコ」と答え、その理由を説明しました。他にも「どんなアニメが好き？」「日本とアメリカどっちが良い？」など、個人的な見解を問われることも多く、そんな時は彼らにステレオタイプな知識を教えないように注意しながら（これがかなり難しい）、自分の意見を伝えるようにしています。ネット社会で、知識や情報は簡単に手に入るけれど、一方通行でその正確性も問われる今、直接生徒を目の前に話ができるこのプログラムは、生徒たちと双方のコミュニケーションを通して、より正確な情報と、異文化体験を提供できる絶好の機会だと思います。

パンデミックによって学校訪問が難しくなったここ一年程は、オンライン訪問に移行し、引き続き多くの生徒や先生とリモートラーニングで繋がってきました。今後は、学校訪問とオンライン訪問の両方を可能にし、さらに対象地域を拡大して、より多くの生徒と日本との繋がりを築き、彼らが異文化・多文化に興味を持つきっかけになれればと願っています。

JASC 2021 Dragon Boat Team: Nichi-Bei-GO

JASC has committed to the 2021 Dragon Boat season and are looking for paddlers to join our team! Our boat is typically made up of both Japanese and non-Japanese JASC members. You do not need prior paddling experience. (Our inaugural team was 90% novices.) We are competitive, but mainly focus on having a great time out on the water and learning to paddle as one. Colorado-Japan Virtual Discussion Group

University students from five different Colorado universities were selected by JASC leadership to participate in a Virtual Discussion Group with students from universities in Japan and the America Japan Society of Tokyo. This was a program created by students at AJS Tokyo and they held discussion groups with students at 6 different Japan America Societies in the United States.

Our Colorado participants were comprised of three of our Rikai Scholarship winners (Kate Wexler - CU Boulder, Tim Martin - CSU, and Addie Clay - University of Denver) , a JASC intern, (Indy de la Luz - CU Denver) and a JASC volunteer (Everett Williams - Metropolitan State University of Denver).

Feedback from our Tokyo participants was that Team Colorado had a high participation rate and prepared high quality presentations every time! We are so proud of our Team Colorado students and look forward to more cross-border discussion groups in the future!

Virtual Japan Cup

JASC staff spent a few weeks this spring virtually visiting classrooms around CO & WY speaking with students about the importance of continuing their Japanese language studies, how to apply them to the real world and what opportunities are out there for them. We visited 9 schools, 27 classes and approximately 500 students! We sincerely enjoyed connecting with the teachers and students. Although we were unable to conduct Japan Cup this year, we are so glad we went on the road with this presentation. Feedback from teachers was fantastic!

I received positive comments from students after the presentations. Thank you very much for all you had done. We enjoyed the event!

The way you responded to the students was so warm, helpful, and encouraging that all of my students felt comfortable talking to you. Career advice is so hard to find for a language, but you went above and beyond by giving individual advice to each and every one. I couldn't have asked for a better outcome! Thank you again!!

We are grateful to have you in my my classes. I believe that many of my students are more motivated to study after your visit. We would love to have you again virtually (or in-person) during the next academic year!

皆さん、銭湯に行かれたことはありますか。銭湯とは公衆浴場のこと。実は日本で温泉が世間で注目されるずっと前から、銭湯は存在していました。11世紀末から12世紀に書かれた日本最古の説話集『今昔物語』の中に「東山へ湯浴みにとて人を誘ひ」とあるところから見て、すでに平安時代には京都に銭湯があった可能性は高いそうです。

私の生まれ育った町には、昔ながらの銭湯が、今も当時のままの姿で営業を続けています。男湯と女湯の入り口の間には、店の人(番頭)が座る番台があり、その先は数枚の衝立で仕切られた男女それぞれの脱衣所があり、ガラス戸の向こうにはいくつかに仕切られ湯船と簡素な洗い場があるだけのとても小さなお風呂屋さんです。一時期、日本全国にこのようなお風呂屋さんが多く存在したようですが、今ではスーパー銭湯と呼ばれるサウナやジャグジー、食事スペースやマッサージ器具などが設置された大型施設が人気を集めています。

時を経て形は変われど、日本の入浴文化は今でも生活の一部として楽しまれています。皆さんも、シャワー生活を送る中、一日の終わりに、お風呂に肩までどっぷり漬かりたくなることありませんか。

旬の食べ物「春」

日本で春といえば、お花見、イチゴ狩り、たけのこ堀り、潮干狩りなどたくさん食べ物に関連した行事が思い浮かびます。毎年、我が家では近くの竹やぶに家族や友人そろってたけのこ堀りに行っていたので、この季節になると、つい懐かしく思い出されます。「旬のものを食べる」ことは、その栄養面や美味しさだけでなく、自然の恵み、環境、そして習慣にふれ、食を楽しむ日本の大切な文化の一つです。さらにはこのような行事を通して「旬の食べ物」にふれることは食育にも繋がります。いつ、どこで、なにが、どのように生育し、どうやって調理したら美味しくいただけるのか、学びが満載です。最近では、アメリカと同様に日本でもスーパーで季節にかかわらず、いろいろな食材が手に入るようになり、旬の食べ物に対する関心が少し薄れているかもしれませんが、それでも、春になると、たくさんの親子連れがスコップやバケツを手に海や山に出かけ、収穫した旬の食べ物を頬張る写真を見るとほっとします。今年の夏は、コロラドならではのPALISADE Peach狩りに出かけてみるのもいいかもしれませんね。
