JASC Member Spotlight: Courtney Ozaki

Courtney Headshot.jpg

Konichiwa! I am a proud JASC member based in Denver and have been fortunate to be able to appreciate and enjoy JASC's programming, arts & culture, and professional events for many years. I am a Creative Producer and Cultural Connector, and last year I founded the Japanese Arts Network or 'JA-NE' (pronounced 'jaa-neh') - a national resource for artistic collaboration and connection. We were looking forward to working with JASC this past March to present Japanese dance ensemble enra from Tokyo at the Broomfield Auditorium, but unfortunately, we had to postpone their performance when our community started to be impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. We can't wait to continue our ongoing relationship with JASC in sharing Japanese artist experiences in America with the broader community.

JA-NE provides access to resources, and develops programs and platforms that support and strengthen visibility for Japanese Artists in America who create with 'cultural intention'. We are dedicated to bringing together artists, communities, and stakeholders by celebrating and advancing arts experiences. Our most recent project, ZOTTO [ぞっと] - A Supernatural Journey is an immersive audio, visual, and tactile experience with Japanese yokai/obake folklore and cultural references throughout its narrative. This theatrical program can be experienced in-person by driving to dedicated locations in Denver's historic Five Points, Downtown (including Pacific Mercantile!), and Capitol Hill neighborhoods, or it may also be engaged with digitally from home. Our aim is to educate audiences about Denver’s rich yet sordid history via a storytelling and artistic lens and offer a social-distance friendly way to experience art.

*Tickets to ZOTTO are available at zotto.bandcamp.com until December 31st.

Rakugo!

December 10, 2020 @ 5:30 PM

Join us from the comfort of your own home for a wonderful evening of comedy, culture and learning about the Japanese traditional art form of rakugo. “Zabu” came to New York City to start his dream project of bringing rakugo performances to all 50 states. As his project got off the ground and live performances began, COVID hit. He was forced to return to Japan and put the project on hold. As he waited and waited for life to return to “normal”, he realized he could continue his mission online. We are so happy to bring him to Colorado to share his talent and passion!
